Paediatric Emergency Department

The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children (Children's Hospital) has a dedicated paediatric emergency department. An average of 34000 children are seen by our team every year.

The services include:

  • 24 hour Paediatric Emergency Department
  • Minor Injury Stream
  • Nurse Practitioner services
  • Review clinics for minor injuries and medical problems
  • Liaison with other specialists (e.g.orthopaedics, surgery, neurosurgery)
  • Play specialists

How to access the Emergency Department

The emergency department is open 24 hours a day and no appointment is needed for emergencies or injuries. We advise for most patients your first port of call is your primary care GP who will assess your need to attend the emergency department and refer you to us. Any seriously ill or injured child should attend the Emergency Department directly.

Referrals are accepted from:

  • General Practice
  • Emergency Departments or minor injury units
  • Health Visitors
  • Other specialists (ophthalmology, ENT, opticians etc)
  • Social Workers
