Dermatology – Developing nurse led services

The Dermatology Day Care Unit is based on Level 4 in Belfast City Hospital and opens Monday to Friday, from 7am until 8pm. Sister Ashley Calvert (Manager of the Unit) states ‘This enables patients who work or have commitments outside of normal working hours to attend the unit to receive one of the many treatments and services offered by the nursing team’. There are a range of treatments provided in the Day Care Unit including:

  • UVB/PUVA a light treatment used mainly to treat eczema and psoriasis. internetdermatology.jpg
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment used to destroy pre-cancerous and cancerous skin cells.
  • Photobiologic investigations include a range of tests used to determine a patient’s sensitivity to light.
  • Ionotphoresis used to treat a condition called hyperhidrosis (increased sweating) 
  • Administration and education on subcutaneous methotrexate. 
  • Topical treatments, education and support for patients with range of skin conditions.

There is also a Dermatology Day Care Unit based on Level 5, OPD department on the RVH site. Each month a total of 1500 patients receive nurse led treatment on either the BCH or RVH unit.
