A snapshot of Occupational Therapy for children and young people

29/11/2017

Paediatric Occupational Therapists work with children and young people to enable them to take part in their daily life activities, also called ‘occupations’.

As a service we are aware of the importance of being able to successfully engage with the childhood occupations of ‘self-care’, ‘being productive’, ‘play and leisure’. Occupational Therapy enables children to be more successful in their childhood occupations.

To help people understand the role of a Paediatric Occupational Therapist, we dared to venture into new territory: we decided to create a video which informs parents, children, young people and professionals in a fun, easy-to-understand and enjoyable way about Occupational Therapy.

To this aim, we had the pleasure of working alongside Lyn and Eleanor McMullan from ‘The Production Company’ who are experts in handling short video creations. Lyn and Eleanor gave us great guidance as we embarked on an adventure of learning about camera angles, creating film sets, dealing with unexpected background noises and much more. The children had lots of fun filming and loved the opportunity to get in front of the camera. Needless to say they are counting the days to see the end result.

The video “A snapshot of Occupational Therapy for children and young people” is being launched on the 30th November 2017 at Knockbracken Hall and will be available from this date onwards for public viewing on the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust’s you-tube channel.

As a service we hope to use the video at all our parent and teacher information and goal setting sessions. We envisage it will give parents, professionals, children and young people a good understanding of the role of Occupational Therapy within the Paediatric service.
