23rd Annual Regional Sexual Health Conference

30/11/2017

The Sexual Health Training Team, Belfast HSC Trust, is delighted to have delivered its 23rd Regional Sexual Health Conference for Northern Ireland at Titanic Belfast on Wednesday 22nd November 2017.

This signature event originated almost a quarter of a century ago, growing out of a need to provide learning and development for the then EHSSB HIV Awareness Training Teams. This focus widened in the years that followed affording other professionals with an interest in HIV and Sexual Health an opportunity to learn from the current evidence base including recent developments, initiatives and interventions whilst informally developing a wider professional network.

This year’s theme was ‘Inequalities in Health for Women’ bringing together 170 delegates spanning the statutory, voluntary, community and private sectors who were provided with a current evidence base and a range of issues, interventions and initiatives to help reduce inequalities in health for women. These included:

  • Honour Based Violence
  • Violence, Substance Use and Sexual Exploitation
  • Forced Marriage
  • Abortion
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Needle Exchange and Harm Reduction for People Who Inject Drugs
  • Inside Outside Scotland – A project impacting women involved in the sex industry
  • Genito Urinary Medicine

The event concluded with special recognition for Pat Knowles, Social Work Manager of the Regional HIV Social Work Team for her Outstanding Contribution, spanning many decades, to HIV Services, supporting and improving the lives of people living with HIV.

A full conference report will be available shortly, including a more detailed overview of the main themes along with the conference evaluation.
