Industrial Action Update #9

There will be major disruption to all health and social care services across Belfast Trust on Wednesday 18th December due to strike action by the Royal College of Nursing, UNISON, UNITE and NIPSA. 

Whilst this will include all hospital and community services the Trust is continuing to work with our Trade Union partners to ensure safe staffing is maintained during this period of strike action. 

Due to the impact of this Industrial Action we have cancelled 1486 outpatient appointments, 25 inpatient procedures and 95 day cases for Wednesday 18 December.

We have taken every step to ensure those impacted by service disruption have been notified. 

Once again, we apologise to all patients affected by these decisions.

 

 

Hospital Services

Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Dietetics & Podiatry clinics across hospital sites could see service disruption. All patients affected will be contacted and a new appointment offered.

Inpatients

On Wednesday 18th December 2019, the majority of patients will have their surgery cancelled.  All patients affected are being contacted and a new appointment will be offered.

Daycases

On Wednesday 18th December 2019, all daycase and endoscopy appointments are cancelled.  All patients affected are being contacted and a new appointment will be offered.

Switchboard

Due to strike action there will be major disruption to Belfast Trust’s switchboard from 6am Wednesday 18 December to 6am Thursday 19 December.

Regrettably, calls to switchboard will not be answered during these times.

Once again, we are sorry for the inconvenience we know this will cause.

For emergency on-call pharmacist after 9pm please phone 078 5054 2539. This will be in place until 6am.

 


Outpatients – Cancelled

On Wednesday 18th December 2019:

The majority of outpatient appointments will be cancelled at:

• Belfast City Hospital
• Royal Victoria Hospital
• Children’s Hospital
• Mater Hospital
• Musgrave Park Hospital

All community dental appointments at Arches, Beech Hall, Bradbury, Carlisle and Knockbreda have been cancelled, as well as gynae and ophthalmology clinics at Beech Hall and Shankhill.

 

Outpatients – Not cancelled

On Wednesday 18th December 2019:

Some telephone review appointments will continue as normal.

Belfast City Hospital:

Bridgewater Suite, including patients who would usually attend urology day care for chemotherapy treatment.

Royal Victoria Hospital Site:

  • School of Dentistry
  • Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital

Children’s Hospital:

  • Haematology clinics
  • Oncology clinics

Wellbeing and Treatment Centres

In our Wellbeing and Treatment Centres the majority of outpatient appointments will proceed as normal, with the exception of community dental clinics, gynaecology and ophthalmology clinics at Beech Hall and Shankill centres.

Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Dietetics and Podiatry services to community and domiciliary patients and clients will continue as normal. There may be some disruption to services delivered and patients will be contacted if their appointment is being rescheduled.

 


Community Services

There will be disruption to a number of community services provided to adults, families and children.

 

Adult Services:

Domiciliary care services will not be affected.

Critical/essential calls have been identified within core District nursing teams which will be maintained.  There will be a limited service in place for specialist community nursing services.

Day Centres – 1 day closure

Mica Day Centre, Fallswater Day Centre, Community Day Services in North and West Belfast will be closed. All families and carers of those affected have been informed directly.

Day Centres – Not closed

Learning Disability day centres Edgcumbe, Orchardville, Suffolk, Everton, Mount Oriel and Fortwilliam will operate with a reduced level of service. All families and carers of those affected have been informed directly.

Short Breaks/Respite - Cancelled

A number of learning disability short breaks / respite in Trench Park and Rigby Services are cancelled. All families and carers have been informed directly.

Out of Hours Community Services

There will continue to be access to out of hours emergency Social Work Services and Community Mental Health Services for Older People.

Access to emergency Mental Health Home Treatment and critical mental health calls will be maintained as well as access to Approved Social Work service.

 

Children’s Services:

Short Breaks – 1 day closure

All short breaks have been cancelled at Forest Lodge and Willow Lodge Short Break Units. Parents of those affected have been notified.

Children’s Community Services

There will be a limited emergency service in place for children’s community nursing services and for statutory social work services.

There will be no Health Visiting, School Nurse, Family Nurse Partnership, Immunisation services or public health nurse services on this day.

Services provided from the following centres will not be operational on this day: Beersbridge Family Centre, Child Care Centre, Whiterock Family Centre, PACCS, Contact Centre.  Those affected have been advised.

The Regional Emergency Social Work Service for both adults and children will be operational as normal.
