Acute Mental Health Inpatient Services
There are a number of inpatient units across Belfast which provide a safe environment for assessment, treatment and therapeutic work for a range of severe mental health conditions. These services form part of a planned and integrated approach to care which is delivered in conjunction with the community mental health services and is designed to promote recovery.
Within the acute ward all aspects of physical health, social care needs and risks are jointly managed by a multi-disciplinary team.
The acute mental health wards in Belfast are:
- Rathlin Ward at Knockbracken
Rathlin has accommodation for 12 men and 12 women, all in single en-suite rooms.
- Wards J, K and L at the Mater Hospital
These wards provide accommodation for 55 people in single sex (J,K) and mixed wards(L).
How to access the Service
Acute inpatient care can be accessed through the Home Treatment Team and also by GPs, the Approved Social Work System or the Emergency Duty Team.
