Genito-urinary Medicine (GUM) Clinic

Genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinics, also known as Sexual health clinics, provide tests for sexually transmitted infections such as: -

• Chlamydia,
• Genital Warts
• Gonorrhoea
• Syphilis
• Herpes
• HIV

Confidentiality is a fundamental component of working in the clinic. Our staff are professionally trained in dealing with all sexual health problems and providing advice, education and information to patients, their family/friends and outside agencies.

Young people are very welcome to attend our clinic, it is not necessary to bring a parent or adult with you, but it can be helpful if you are under 16 yrs old. We do not routinely disclose your visit to a parent or your GP.


How to access this service

What to do before you come to the clinic
It would be helpful if you did not pass urine for 2 hours (male) and 1 hour (female) before coming to the clinic.

When planning to attend our clinic please allow up to 3 hours for your visit as this is a walk-in service that can be very busy.

Clinic Times

Clinics are held on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Doors open at 7.30am for registration with morning clinics commencing at 9am. Patients may be offered an afternoon slot on Wednesday and Friday afternoon clinics, if morning clinics are full.

Please note. The clinic is closed on weekends and bank holidays.

Waiting times and Prioritisation

When planning to attend our clinic please allow up to 3 hours for your appointment as this is a walk-in service that can be very busy.

If no appointment is available on the day you attend the walk-in service, we will aim to see patients with urgent problems within 48 hours.

The clinic is situated on Level 3 of the Outpatients Centre on the Royal Hospitals site Falls Road.
Access is also available via the main hospital following the directions for level 3 Outpatients Department.

Regional Centre for HIV care

The Genitourinary Medicine Clinic is the Regional Centre for HIV care and management providing services to people from throughout Northern Ireland.

The multidisciplinary team offers a range of specialist support and advice for people living with HIV in Northern Ireland; this also includes working with voluntary agencies.

Newly diagnosed HIV patients wishing to register for care or HIV positive patients already receiving care elsewhere, and wishing to transfer their care to our clinic , need to arrange an appointment. No GP referral is necessary.
