Gynaecology services relocates

06/02/2012

Continuing our plans to reorganise the delivery of acute services in Belfast, Gynaecology services will move on Monday 6 February 2012.

The following changes will take place:

  • gynaecology inpatient services will be provided from the Belfast City Hospital Level 5
  • gynaecology day case services will be provided from the Mater Hospital.

The gynaecology day case services will eventually relocate to the Belfast City Hospital when a proposed new Day Procedure Unit is developed.

We are confident that both our patients and staff will realise the benefits of these new arrangements. It will ensure continued service quality and reduce unnecessary duplication and fragmentation of services.

All patients affected will be notified of the location of their appointment or treatment.

Joan Wells, Gynaecology Services Manager, said ‘On behalf of the Gynaecology Project Team, I want to thank all the staff involved in delivering this major service change, whilst continuing to provide the current service to all our patients. We are confident that both our patients and staff will realise the benefits of these new arrangements very quickly.’

Background to the Process

The modernisation of gynaecology services was consulted on between 5 July 2010 and 31 October 2010. A multi-disciplinary project team which included service users and trade union representatives considered a number of options for the future location of the service. Following these considerations and consultation responses it was concluded that the Belfast City Hospital offered the best location for a single gynaecology inpatient and day case service. The project team proposals were accepted by the Trust Board in December 2010.

ENT and Vascular have already relocated as part of this modernisation process, successfully relocating in July 2011 and December 2011 respectively.
