Update on Emergency Department at Belfast City Hospital

Belfast Trust is planning for the temporary closure of the Emergency Department in Belfast City Hospital in October 2011 unless we are able to recruit middle grade doctors i.e. those with at least eight years experience four of which would have been in Emergency Medicine.

Chief Executive Colm Donaghy said, ‘If in the meantime we are able to recruit staff the situation will change. But for now we have to make plans to ensure we have a safe service from October.’

This closure should not be confused with the longer term discussion that needs to be held in consultation with the public on the future shape of the Emergency Departments across Belfast.
