Emergency Department at Belfast City Hospital will remain open until November

The Board of Directors of Belfast Health and Social Care Trust today approved the temporary closure of the unit – caused by an acute shortage of staff but agreed that, with the support of existing staff in hospitals across greater Belfast it will be able to remain open until the beginning of November.

Chief Executive Colm Donaghy said our first priority is to provide a safe service to our patients and we are grateful to our staff as we adjust our services in order to do this.

“To ensure safe, sustainable emergency services in Belfast we will therefore close the unit at Belfast City Hospital on a temporary basis from 1 November.

“We will now put in place alternative arrangements and communicate these widely with the public so that anyone who has a health emergency will clearly know where to go to receive treatment.”
