A new medicines dispensing robot has been installed at Belfast City Hospital and its introduction has been welcomed by Health Minister Edwin Poots.

The robot allows for increased dispensing speed, better stock control, increased accuracy and better utilisation of staff time.

Speaking as he viewed the new technology, the Minister said: “The introduction of state-of-the-art robotics into pharmacy systems here at Belfast City Hospital brings many benefits. This application of modern technology provides opportunity for enhanced safety and increased efficiency.

“It is also clear that the new system makes the best use of pharmacists’ and technicians’ time and is an excellent example of how our Health Service is responding to the many challenges to deliver high quality services within the available resources.”

Congratulations

The Minister went on to congratulate the pharmacy team at the hospital for their efforts in installing the new robot and introducing new processes to improve dispensing systems.

He said: “This involved a tremendous effort by pharmacy staff and their work is to be recognised and commended.

"This type of innovation is to be welcomed and I am keen to see further application of technology to improve the delivery of services. This includes the introduction of electronic prescribing as a further way of modernising our medicines management system.”
