Minister Poots visits Trust's ED Departments

The Minister Edwin Poots recently visited the Emergency Departments at the Royal Victoria and Mater Hospitals.

The Minister wanted to take the opportunity to see first-hand how the emergency departments at the Royal and Mater hospitals were coping and wanted to thank all the staff involved for taking this challenge on, dealing with it so effectively and working so hard to ensure that patients are able to obtain the services they need.

The Minister said “Staff in Emergency Departments are there to provide specialised treatment for people who are seriously ill or injured and need to be treated urgently. Too often, time and resources are taken up by people whose ailments are neither serious nor urgent."

The Minister continued: “The health service has taken a range of measures to ensure that the healthcare needs of the local population are being met. The evidence to date, shows that the staff, at both hospitals, have coped well with patients presenting at the Emergency Departments.

The Minister also visited the Royal’s cardiac unit. The unit provides a wide range of heart surgery procedures for both adults and children (excluding heart transplants). This is a regional service for patients from throughout Northern Ireland.
