Following a meeting yesterday with Health Minister Edwin Poots, Chief Executive of Belfast Trust, Colm Donaghy has welcomed the special measures announcement by Mr Poots as an opportunity to reassure patients, clients and their families that Belfast Trust is delivering a safe, good quality service.

Speaking today he said, “I welcome the enhanced oversight arrangements announced by the Minister.” He continued, “We know that despite very sad outcomes for some of our patients – the vast majority of those in our care receive a service that compares very well with other parts of the UK. And I have been very moved in recent days by the phone calls and letters I have received from people whose lives have been changed for the better because of the treatment and care they have received from the staff of this Trust.”

Speaking about the recent RQIA interim report into the Pseudomonas outbreak in the neonatal unit at Royal Jubilee Maternity Service he said, “While there was an issue around the taps in the neonatal unit at Royal Jubilee Maternity Service it is important to note that there was no criticism of the clinical care. And it was good hygiene practices by staff that ensured there were no further deaths.”

He concluded, “I am very proud of the staff in Belfast Trust who are on the front line every day playing their part in delivering the best possible service to the public.”
