General Surgery reorganisation in July 2012

On Monday 9 July 2012 the general surgical team will implement their new arrangements for the service, designed to improve the patient experience by managing emergency and elective patients through dedicated units across Belfast Health & Social Care Trust.

In line with the public consultation in summer 2010, the service will base the:

  • Emergency Surgical Unit in 6a, 6b and 6c in Royal Victoria Hospital, creating one single entry point for all emergency surgical patients, aligned to the Emergency Department;
  • Specialist units for colorectal surgery and oesophagogastric surgery in Belfast City Hospital;
  • Specialist units for hepatobilary surgery and short-stay general surgery in the Mater Hospital
  • Some outpatient clinics will relocate from RVH to BCH and the Mater Hospital.

A project team is working with colleagues, both across Belfast Trust and externally, to ensure a smooth implementation of the detailed plans. Further information on the service re-organisation will be provided in the coming weeks.
