Broadway Towers was a hive of activity this morning as two more containers of vital aid supplies were loaded, bound for the Phillipines. Following the devastating effects of Typhoon Haiyan, the Belfast people have been donating generously, with the result that our local Fillipino community needed to find additional accommodation to store the aid before it was shipped to the Philippines.

Belfast Trust were pleased to be able to help by offering space at Broadway Towers (our nursing accommodation) on the Royal Hospitals site to gather and store boxes of donations and aid before they were shipped to the Philippines.

Speaking about the generousity of our local people, Tim Magowan, Northern Ireland Director with Tearfund, said: “Within hours of the Philippines typhoon hitting land, we had Filipino church leaders and volunteers beginning to provide aid. Now, our network of churches and organisation has swung into action providing water, food and shelter to thousands of people. Their incredible generosity so far brings help and hope in the midst of this disaster.”

Earlier this week, Lord Mayor Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir and Deputy Lord Mayor Alderman Christopher Stalford joined volunteers and representatives of the local Filipino community at Broadway Towers to load the first container which is already on route to its destination.

Belfast Appeal Day – 29 November

With fundraising events happening across Belfast, Belfast City Council in partnership with Belfast Trust, Tearfund, Trocaire and the Filipino community are joining together to encourage people across Belfast to get involved in fundraising activities.

A special event is taking place in city hall on Friday morning with school choirs, music from Filipino bands, and representatives from Trocaire and Tearfund to share how funds raised are helping on the ground in the Philippines.
