Open Day at Midwifery Led Unit

The Midwifery Led Unit at the Mater Hospital has held an open day for staff and members of the public which provided an opportunity to view the unit.

To date 106 babies have been born at the unit, and many of the mothers returned with their babies to thank staff at the unit for their support and care.

The midwifery led unit offers care to women with straightforward pregnancies in which the midwives are the professional responsible for care. Midwives promote natural childbirth and encourage mums to remain as active as possible during their labours.

The newly refurbished unit boasts 4 state of the art birthing suites incorporating three birthing pools, the suites have flat screen TVs, iPod docking stations and ensuite bathrooms. Women and their families have access to their own kitchen and partners are encouraged to stay to provide support.

The midwifery led unit in the Mater is the first in Belfast, and will be available as a choice of care to all women who decide to have their babies with the Belfast Trust.
