Mater Green Gym awarded UK Outdoors and Active Award

The Mater Green Gym has been awarded a UK Outdoors and Active Award presented at the TCV Green Heroes award ceremony held at Westminster on Tuesday 27 October 2015.

This UK award recognised the many benefits of the Green Gym group which has been running in the Inpatient Mental Health Unit at the Mater for over 8 years, a partnership between Occupational Therapy staff, The Conservation Volunteers (NI) and Health Promotion.

Occupational Therapist Anne Sproule and Tricia Keogh-Hodgett from Health Promotion were delighted to join a group of 8 volunteers and TCV staff at the awards event in the Houses of Parliament at Westminster.

This was an excellent opportunity to showcase the great work completed with this group which enables people experiencing mental health problems to be physically active in the outdoors as part of their recovery. A Promotional Video recorded at one of the weekly Green Gym sessions was played and was very well received by the audience many of whom were MPs, including local MP, Nigel Dodds, the famous Environmentalist Jonathan Porritt (CBE), TV conservationist Bill Oddie and directors of TCV Orla Cochrane and Rita Clifton (CBE).

A local event is due to be held on 24 November in Belfast with William Bird (MBE) so that more of the volunteers will be able to join in celebrations to mark this achievement.
