SABR Conference hosted by Belfast Trust

The first British Institute of Radiology SABR conference was hosted by Belfast Trust last week.

Organised by Dr Gerry Hanna of the Cancer Centre, it attracted clinicians from throughout the UK keen to hear current best practice for the use of SABR, a specialised radiotherapy currently offered in Belfast Trust for some lung tumours.

SABR, or Stereotactic Radiotherapy, is suitable for some patients with lung cancer. It doubles the rate of cure compared to conventional radiotherapy, reduces the treatment time required and causes no more long term side effects than conventional radiotherapy.

Stereotactic Radiotherapy was introduced here in 2011 but patients had to travel to Leeds to have treatment. It started in Belfast in 2013 and to date over 50 patients have been treated with SABR and the results are as expected – good!
