Belfast Trust hosts International Sexual Health Conference


The Genitourinary Medicine team in Belfast Trust recently hosted the Joint BASHH-SSSTDI Conference on the 18th- 20th June. It is the first time British Association for Sexual Health & HIV and Society for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Ireland hold their annual conference jointly conference in Northern Ireland.

Over 500 national and international delegates attended the conference in the Europa Hotel. Across the 3 days, over 60 plenary and oral presentations, over 250 poster abstracts and various sponsored symposiums were presented and discussed by experts in the field of sexual health.

The presidents of both societies, Dr Elizabeth Carlin (UK) and Dr Say Quah (Ireland), opened the meeting with the recognition of the historic milestone for sexual health as this year marks 100 years since the Venereal Diseases Act was passed by Parliament in 1917. Presentations from Mr Brain O’Donnell (GUM), Dr Stephen Megarity (GUM), Dr Emma McCarty (GUM), Prof. Wallace Dinsmore (GUM), Dr Carol Emerson (GUM), Dr John Lindsay (Endrocrinology), from Belfast Trust, were among the best received speakers of the conference.


The Belfast Trust GUM team have received unending praise for the excellent scientific content and its social programme.
