Director of Finance, Estates & Capital Planning

Maureen Edwards

Maureen took up the post of Interim Director of Finance, Estates & Capital Planning on 15 February 2017.  Maureen was previously co-director of Financial Management  in the Belfast Trust and prior to that held a number of senior finance posts in the Royal Hospitals and North & West Belfast Trust.  Maureen began her career as an NHS finance trainee in Wales before returning to Belfast in 1998.



Director of Unscheduled and Acute Care

Bernie was appointed as Director of Unscheduled and Acute Care in November 2013 and is responsible for Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Theatres & Sterile Services, emergency departments, medical and cardiology services, neurosciences and imaging, medical physics, allied health professionals and GP Out of Hours service.

Bernie is a registered general nurse having trained in Royal Victoria Hospital specialising in operating department nursing.




Director of Surgery and Specialist Services

Caroline Leonard

Caroline took up post as Interim Director of Surgery & Specialist Services on 20th February 2017.  She is responsible for Surgery, Cancer & Specialist Medicine and Pharmacy & Laboratories Services. Caroline in recent years has been Co-Director for Surgery and Co-Director for Cancer & Specialist Medicine and has over 25 years’ experience in NHS management.




Director of Specialist Hospitals & Women's Health

Aidan was appointed Interim Director of Specialist Hospitals & Women's Health on 1 March 2016. He has responsibility for Royal Belfast Hospital Sick Children, Maternity, Gynae, ENT, Elective Orthopaedics in Musgrave Park Hospital, Fracture Services in Royal Victoria Hospital, Neuro Rehabilitation, Regional Disablement Services and the Dental Hospital.

Previously Aidan was the Co Director in the Trust for Trauma, Orthopaedics, and Rehabilitation Services.




Interim Director of Childrens Community Services & Interim Executive Director of Social Work

John Growcott

John took up the post of Acting Director of Childrens Community Services/Acting Executive Director of Social Work in October 2017. He had worked as a social worker, and subsequently as an operational manager in Childrens Services, before his appointment in 2007 as Co-Director for Social Work and Social Care Governance in the Belfast Trust.





Director of Medicine & Deputy Chief Executive

Cathy was appointed as Director of Medicine in August 2014 and has a background in Geriatric medicine. She studied in Northern Ireland before moving to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, she was appointed as a Consultant Geriatrician in 1996 and then Clinical Sub-dean in 2001.

In 2004 Cathy returned to Northern Ireland to join the consultant staff at our Royal Victoria Hospital and in 2008 she was appointed as Deputy Medical Director for Belfast Trust.

Cathy has responsibility for Medical Education, Risk, Governance, Litigation, Research and Public Health.



Director of Nursing and User ExperienceBrenda Creaney Director of Nursing and User Experience

Brenda Creaney

Brenda was appointed as Director of Nursing and User Experience in January 2010. She is responsible for Nursing and Client support services within the Trust.

Brenda trained at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast from 1984 before moving to London in 1989 where she undertook a range of roles in Neonatal and Paediatric care at the Royal London Hopsital and the Chelsea & Westminister Hospital.

Brenda returned to Northern Ireland in 2000 to the Royal Group of Hospitals working as a Directorate Manager in both RVH and RBHSC.






Interim Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development

Jacqui Kennedy

Jacqui was appointed Interim Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development in February 2018.  She was previously Co-Director of Human Resources in the Trust with responsibility for Recruitment, Pay & Conditions, Pay Modernisation, Health and Wellbeing, Attendance Management, Equality, Medical HR and Employment Law.  Prior to that Jacqui held a number of senior HR posts in the Business Services Organisation and the Royal Group of Hospitals.  Jacqui began her career in the private sector and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.





Director of Adult Social and Primary Care 

Marie Heaney

Marie was appointed to the Director of Adult Social and Primary Care post on 1st October 2017.

She previously was Co-Director in Older People and Physical Health Disability and Sensory Services and has held a number of posts service delivery service development and strategic planning.
