New Midwifery led Unit at the Mater Hospital

17/04/2013

Following on from our consultation last year on the future of maternity service in Belfast, a new Midwifery led Unit will become operational  next week in the Mater Hospital.

The freestanding midwifery led unit, a first for Belfast, offers care to women with straightforward pregnancies in which the midwives are the professional responsible for care. Currently a major upgrade is ongoing at the Mater, to ensure up to date facilities will be available. Work includes the creation of birthing rooms with pool facilities and a homely care setting with comfortable soft furnishings.

Obstetric care for women who have particular medical needs or complications will be provided at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Service.

Mothers already booked to deliver in the Mater will receive a telephone call in the next few weeks to discuss their needs and choose to either transfer to the Royal Jubilee Maternity Service, or plan for their delivery in the new midwifery led unit in the Mater.
