Regional Recruitment wins an HPMA Award

The regional recruitment teams are delighted to announce that they have been successful in winning the Capsticks Award for Innovation in HR at a recent Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) awards ceremony.

This entry highlighted the difficulty each of the five Trusts in Northern Ireland had faced competing with each other to fill posts and as a result of this the recruitment teams across the region established a model of working together to reduce duplication and save money.

This model has been used to regionally recruit Allied Health Professionals (AHP’s) and to date has recruited physiotherapists, pharmacists, podiatrists, occupational therapists and radiologists with each Trust taking the lead on one of these areas for the region.

In addition the new model has also piloted selection based on occupational testing only for some of the AHP areas and this has significantly reduced the overall time to recruit.

Other key benefits are:

  • Applicants only have to attend one selection method
  • Historically panellists interviewed for 1 full week on average and competed for the same applicants. Now a shared workload with regional colleagues, thereby giving them more time for patient care.
  • Now, one HR team processes all activity on behalf of all Trusts. One assessment/interview to organise and one regional waiting list to manage with one set of pre-employment checks.
  • The time it takes to create the waiting list has reduced from 160 days to 20 days on average.
  • Savings – cumulative cost of five Trusts’ recruiting separately was £20,885 compared to £2302 per regional recruitment exercise. This equates to a saving of £18,583 per recruitment episode.

The success of this project for the AHP areas has meant that other key service areas are now being identified as opportunities for regional recruitment to further improve efficiencies and service improvement married with substantial financial savings.
