Response to Maternity Consultation and the Way Forward

25/10/2012

The response to the consultation proposal to reshape maternity services in Belfast has been formally approved by Trust Board.

It was approved that the future model of maternity service for Belfast will establish one Consultant-led Obstetric Service, with an Alongside Midwife-led Unit, on the Royal Hospitals site and a free-standing Midwife-Led Unit at the Mater Hospital.

Choosing where and how to give birth is an important decision for mothers to be. The proposed model gives women greater choice in their options for maternity care, with the change to a free-standing midwife lead unit at the Mater. It also offers improved safety for all women by bringing together the labour ward consultant obstetric presence in one unit.
