Cycling is a great way to commute, get fit and feel good. As well as saving you money on fuel costs, parking and wear and tear on your car. The Trust’s Cycle to Work Scheme allows any member of staff to sacrifice part of their salary in return for a bicycle and safety equipment. By joining the scheme, you are likely to save between 30-40% (depending on your tax bracket) on the retail price of the bike and equipment through Tax and National Insurance exemptions.
Car-sharing can save you money. Have a look at http://www.liftshare.com/sub/1218. It is free to join our scheme and find others travelling the same way as you. And it’s totally flexible; you agree how often it would suit you to share. The scheme is open to car owners and non car owners. The typical commuter who car shares every day saves around £800 per year.
Walking all or part of your journey has a number of benefits, it’s free and it decreases levels of illness and reduces feelings of stress. Walking also increases energy levels and a sense of well-being.
Public Transport Schemes
Taking the bus to work could be another option through TaxSmart. This is the name of Translink’s annual bus travel card also available through an employer salary sacrifice scheme. With TaxSmart you can also save money on Income Tax and National Insurance contributions by paying for your bus travel directly from your salary. You can save up to 31% on your annual bus travel. This is in addition to any discount you may already be receiving for bus travel.
If getting the train is easier for you then the Train Saver Scheme could be the option for you. This allows Belfast Trust to purchase annual NIR tickets on behalf of staff thus facilitating monthly/weekly payments to the Trust.
