Urology services relocates

Continuining our plans to reorganise the delivery of acute services in Belfast, Gynaecology services will move on Monday 6 February.

The following changes will take place:

  • urology inpatient and the majority of day case services will be provided from Belfast City Hospital
  • some urology day case services will also be provided at the Mater Hospital for a period of approximately 12 months.

Urology outpatient services will continue to be delivered at the Belfast City Hospital, The Royal Hospitals and the Mater Hospital.

A urology opinion is available for patients in and out of hours from Urology SpR via Belfast City Hospital switchboard: (028) 9032 9241. This service is available even if a patient or is Belfast City Hospital or another hospital.

We are confident that both our patients and staff will realise the benefits of these new arrangements. It will ensure continued service quality and reduce unnecessary duplication and fragmentation of services.

All patients affected will be notified of the location of their appointment or treatment.

Background to the Process

The reorganisation of urology services follows a consultation undertaken between 5 July 2010 and 31 October 2010. A multi-disciplinary project team, which included trade union representatives, considered a number of options for the future location of the service.

Following these considerations and consultation responses it was concluded that the Belfast City Hospital offered the best location for a centralised Urology service. The project team proposals were accepted by the Trust Board in December 2010.
