Youth’s Give and Take Scheme and Belfast Trust

The young people from Include Youth’s Give and Take Scheme and the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust’s Employability Service, run in partnership with Include Youth and Opportunity Youth, achieved more than 150 accredited qualifications between them during the last 12 months.

Many young people could not attend the event due to work or college commitments and for the 20 young people who could be there it was great to see all their hard work recognised onstage.

Tanya McCallen (20) from Carrickfergus was one of the young people at the event. Tanya was referred to the BHSCT Employability Service 18 months ago. Tanya’s ultimate desire is to work within the care sector as a nurse, but for now and following some work experience opportunities arranged by the service, she works in a care home and really enjoys it. Tanya said: “I know how to get a resident up in the morning, washed and dressed. I also know more about nutrition and dietary requirements for residents. “I definitely want to be a nurse in the future, so plan on working as an auxiliary nurse to get some more experience before I eventually go on to study nursing. All of this is definitely helping me get there.”

Hilary Walker said: “I was delighted to present these awards to the young people who have worked hard for these achievements and was pleased that many were able to attend the event. I also wish to thank the staff from within the Trust and from our partnership with Opportunity Youth and Include Youth, who support and encourage all the young people to reach their potential.”

Following the certificate presentations young people were treated to some pampering thanks to the staff from Vogue Hairdressing, Falls Road Belfast, as well as provided with an opportunity to find out more about the help and support services in their area. FASA, Diabetes UK, Action Cancer NI and Lighthouse exhibited during the event and spent time talking to the young people about the work they do.
