About the Service


General Medicine comprises acute internal medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Adult cystic fibrosis service, Medical Therapeutics and Gastroenterology and is situated on ward floors 6 and 8. The wards are laid out in an ‘L’ shaped pattern and are modern and well equipped. Chest medicine is a regional referral centre. Respiratory and Gastro-intestinal endoscopy procedures are performed Endoscopy Unit on the ground floor of the BCH Tower.

Level 6 provides acute medical services, Gastroenterology and Endocrinology. The ward provides services for acute general medicine and is developing services for patients with hypertension and heart failure.

Respiratory Medicine and the Cystic Fibrois Unit are located on the 8th ward level of the B.C.H. Tower. The unit carries out sleep studies and Nasal CPAP/ Ventilation for Sleep Apnoea and provides services for Acute and Chronic Asthma. The service also provides specialist nursing for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Bronchiectasis and those requiring Non Invasive Ventilation

Specialist care for older persons is in two locations on the Belfast City Hospital Campus. Ward Floor 7 in the BCH Tower and Wards 22 & 24 in the Wakehurst Building. The Team provide Rehabilitation services and Acute care.

There are also specialist services for diagnosis and management of Osteoporosis and Dementia. Stroke Services include acute care and rehabilitation.

The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit is located on Ward floor 8

Acute Care of Older Persons in located on Ward Floor 7 of the BCH Tower.

The Stroke Unit is located on Ward 7 North.

Rehabilitation Services are currently Located in the Wakehurst Building
