Clinical Audit

What is Clinical Audit?

Audit is about the improvement in the quality of care through setting standards, carrying out peer review, implementing change and re-evaluation.

"Clinical audit is the systematic and critical analysis of the quality of clinical care including the procedures used for diagnosis, treatment and care; the associated use of resources and the resulting outcome of quality of life for the patient". Department of Health; 1994

Audit is about:

  • Looking at what is actually happening
  • Assessing what ought to happen
  • Taking action: implementing change
  • Looking again: review

Who Should Be Involved in Audit?

Clinical audit is a team event. Anyone in the clinical team can be involved in the process. Most importantly the view of patients should be included and thought should be given as to how they can be involved.

For help with audit design, methodology and the whole process, contact the Clinical Governance Department:
