The Communication Advice CentreThe Communication Advice Centre (CAC) is the regional assessment centre for communication aids in Northern Ireland. It is staffed by a Regional Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. Most referrals are from health or education staff working in the community, although some patients are referred by hospital staff and there are a few self-referrals. Assessment Patients are assessed in Musgrave Park Hospital, or in their homes, day centres, nursing homes or schools, whichever is most appropriate. Communication aids range from picture boards and word charts to portable electronic keyboards and specialist computers. Trial Period Communication equipment can cost several thousand pounds so an assessment always includes a trial period with an aid before a recommendation for purchase is made to the patient’s Community Trust. Multi-disciplinary assessments are available in conjunction with the other specialist services in the Regional Disablement Services. Further information A telephone advice service is available to anyone seeking advice on communication aids for people with speech difficulties. Telephone 028 9090 2000 extension 2917. |
