High Dependency Unit (HDU) (Back)The HDU has 16 beds, and is one of the largest unit of its kind in the United Kingdom. All major elective orthopaedic surgery patients (adults and children) are cared for in HDU for a period immediately after surgery. The unit also cares for patients who have developed complications following surgery (e.g. respiratory or cardiac problems), and patients returning from intensive care units. Many types of major orthopaedic surgery are carried out in Musgrave Park Hospital including total hip and knee joint replacements, revision surgery, spinal surgery, limb lengthening, as well as major upper limb surgery. Patients may require an overnight stay in HDU after surgery, so that their condition may be closely monitored. |
