A networked Wheelchair System called RDSS (Regional Disablement Services IT System) was developed in 2001.

This new system provides a networked link to all of the Legacy Trusts, and provides a number of benefits.

Benefits of RDSS

Speed
existing paper-based system has been replaced with a networked, on-line system. This has resulted in quicker order processing times from submission of a referral requesting a wheelchair, to receipt of a wheelchair by the user.
Traceability
referral requesting wheelchair equipment submitted on-line via RDSS is visible. This helps the Commissioning Trust to follow the progress of their equipment order until delivery to the client.
Availability of Information
online catalogue provides Occupational Therapists with the specifications of wheelchairs and associated equipment.

The Regional Disablement Service IT System won the IT Effectiveness Healthcare Award for the 2001 Best Example of Innovative Technology.
