Coming In to Hospital

 

What to Bring

When coming into hospital, please bring with you the following items:

Personal toiletries including toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth and shaving kit

  • Towel
  • Nightdress or pyjamas
  • Paper hankie
  • Brush and/or comb
  • Dressing gown and slippers
  • Any medicines that you may be taking
  • Diet sheet and any other information that may be of help to the staff who will be planning your care

Please do not bring in food that needs to be kept in a fridge.

TV, Radio and Phones

Patients have access to a combined television and telephone at each bed. Patients will be able to receive telephone calls directly to their bedside, as each patient will be given their own telephone number. This means that patients can be contacted directly by their relatives and friends. If you move to another bed space, however your number will change. The unit will also have an individual television monitor with access to TV channels. This also provides access to the radio. A card can be purchased from a card machine or a member of Patient Line staff.

  • Inbound call charges are 39p/minute off-peak and 49p/minute at all other times

  • 3 days TV for £10
  • 5 days for £15

    Money and Valuables

    The Trust will not accept liability for patient’s personal property or money brought onto its site unless it is handed in for safe custody and a written confirmation is obtained as a receipt.  A patient property record will be completed by a member of hospital staff in the presence of a second member of staff and / or a patient or their personal representative where practicable.

    Money handed over for safe keeping will be sent to the cash office except when there is no office staff present and in those circumstances the valuables will be placed in a secure place and sent to the cash office as soon as is practicable

    Clothing and Laundry

    A bedside locker is provided for your personal belongings. Your relatives or friends are asked to take home any clothing you do not need, or that needs cleaned. Please bring a small bag for this purpose. We do not usually launder personal clothing and do not accept responsibility in the event of loss or damage to personal clothing.

    Medicine and Drugs

    Your Doctor may wish to prescribe new medicines or treatment for you.  Before doing so, they will need to know what other medicines you are already taking, including homeopathic, herbal or dietary medicines.  It is very important that you tell them about all medicines and bring them with you.  This allows a more accurate medication history to be taken and avoids confusion during your stay and on discharge.

    A discharge letter, including your medication at the point of discharge, is sent to your GP following a hospital stay.  Any medication brought with you, will be returned to you when you are discharged, as they are your property.  If  treatment is stopped your permission will be sought for their destruction.

    Travel Expenses

    A Hospital Travel Costs Scheme is available to help people who are entitled to reclaim travel costs to and from hospital for NHS treatment .

    You may be eligible to reclaim travel expenses if you receive Benefits or Credits or are on a Low Income.
