Behavioural, Vocational and Therapeutic (BVT) Services

BEHAVIOURAL, VOCATIONAL AND THERAPEUTIC SERVICES

BVT Services comprises five departments, each catering for a different level of need with activities and environments tailored accordingly.

  • Horticulture

• Workskills

• Social & Occupational Skills

• Intensive Support Unit

• Portmore

In consultation with the ward team, an individual programme of Day Care is drawn up for the patient based on an assessment of their skills and needs. This is implemented and regularly reviewed.

Ward reviews are attended by BVT Staff (reports are provided regularly) and the multidisciplinary setting enhances the quality of care. Resettlement reports are also provided for those patients preparing to live in the community, so that the detailed knowledge of each individual gained by staff can be passed on to carers in the new setting.

Research is ongoing, and advisory committees have been established within BVT to examine areas of particular importance to the well being of patients, and further development of the service. Whilst onsite facilities continue to be improved, emphasis is also placed on forging closer links with the community and using outside resources.

There are regular community trips. Groups attend the North East Institute of Further/Higher Education and are involved with the Citizenship Education Programme. Future developments include participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

As part of the overall treatment plan devised for each individual, the aim of Day Care Services is to empower all patients with the skills and competencies they need to cope with life within the Hospital or in the wider community
