Surgical

Surgical

The surgical directorate within the Royal Hospitals offers specialist services in:

• accident and emergency

• general surgery

• orthopaedics and trauma surgery

• plastics and burns

• radiotherapy

• thoracic surgery

• urology

• vascular surgery

Innovations in the services provided have included:

• the appointment of Northern Ireland's first accident and emergency nurse practitioner

• a second breast care specialist nurse appointment

• the establishment of a risk assessment group

• the opening of a nurse led clinic in fractures

• a new open access endoscopy service pre-assessment clinics for thoracic surgery

The Royal Victoria Hospital's day procedures unit is also managed by the directorate in which open access endoscopy is available with other day surgery. The fracture clinic operates from 8.00am to 8.45pm every day of the year. All regional trauma referrals are re-evaluated in fracture clinic before transfer to theatre or the ward for definitive treatment. The department also offers three nurse led clinics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5.45pm - 6.45pm for the convenience of patients. The consultant led fracture clinic is available Monday to Friday where new reviewed patients are seen. An orthopaedic outpatients clinic is also available five days a week.

The surgical directorate, to enhance quality and patient care, provides a number of nurse specialists - breast care nurses, a stomatherapist, and accident and emergency nurse practitioners.

Outpatients clinics are held in all of the above specialties with an open access policy in the breast clinic. A radiotherapy outpatient service is also available.
