Dementia Services

Valencia ward

What is Dementia?
Dementia is a general loss of cognitive abilities, including impairment of memory as well as one or more of the following: aphasia, apraxia, agnosia, or disturbed planning, organising and abstract thinking abilities

Service Provided
The Dementia Wards based in Knockbracken Healthcare Park admit patients from South and East Belfast (Mahee and Valencia) and North and West Belfast (Skerries). Admissions are arranged through the Consultant in charge of the ward.

The patients admitted to these wards usually have an established diagnosis of Dementia. The focus of these admissions is to assess, treat, rehabilitate and care for patients who may have associated behavioural difficulties, which may not be manageable in the community.

Individuals who are admitted to Valencia or Skerries will undergo an assessment period from which a treatment plan will be implemented. The expected outcome of treatment is for patients to successfully move back home or into community placements.

In Mahee patients are assessed, treated and cared for on the ward, mostly on a long-term basis.

Accessing the Service:
All admissions must be approved by the Senior Consultant.
