Anaesthetics (Paediatrics)

The Anaesthetics service in RBHSC (Children’s Hospital) provides anaesthesia for all surgical specialties in the Children’s Hospital, including expertise in Acute Pain management 24 hours a day along with Pain Nurses.

Eleven Consultant Anaesthetists and up to eight anaesthetic specialty doctors who are training, provide this service to children at locations across Belfast Trust.

  • Cardiac Anaesthesia
  • Regional Anaesthesia
  • Neuroanaesthesia
  • Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
  • Transport and retrieval of PICU patients
  • ENT Anaesthesia
  • Dental Anaesthesia
  • Anaesthesia for spinal surgery
  • Neonatal Anaesthesia
  • Daycase Anaesthesia
  • Anaesthesia for cleft palate surgery

How to Access the Service

  1. All patients will have a preoperative visit from their anaesthetist.
  2. Patients with Acute Pain needs will receive regular visits from the Pain Service.
  3. Some patients will be preassessed if referred by their surgeon.

This service is located in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
