Cardiac Surgery

The Cardiac Surgery Unit in the Belfast Trust provides a wide range of heart surgery procedures for both adults and children (excluding heart transplants).

Based at the Royal Victoria Hospital, this is a regional service for patients from throughout Northern Ireland.
Over the course of the year, our cardiothoracic surgeons perform approximately 1000 operations. Treating some of the most seriously ill patients in Northern Ireland, we deliver the best care for all our patients in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit.

Our surgical team have a wealth of experience in treating patients with heart problems, and a world wide reputation for high clinical standards.  Their expertise ensures that our patients get the best possible outcome from their treatment .

The unit also has an important role in the training of junior heart surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, technicians and perfusionists.

How to access this service

Referrals are made by Consultant Cardiologists.
As this is a regional service all Northern Ireland residents are eligibile for referral to the unit.
