Maternity Services
Over 6500 women a year have their babies delivered by Belfast Trust Maternity Services.
Provided in two locations:
we offer a full range of services, from community care by midwives and GPs to multi-specialty, consultant-led hospital-based care.
Antenatal Care
Antenatal care is planned to meet the womans individual needs.
Where possible care is provided in the community and shared with the Gp and community midwife. Women with particular medical needs will attend the maternity unit for review and management by the multidisciplinary team.
Postnatal Care
The service promotes a short length of stay for women and babies who have had an uncomplicated birth and they will be transferred to community care as soon after delivery as their condition allows.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Some babies because of their prematurity, size or other problems, may need to be looked after in the neonatal intensive care unit situated in the maternity hospital. You may know in advance that your baby will be admitted to this unit, or it may be a decision taken shortly after birth.
This is a regional service which provides neonatal intensive care for babies from across Northern Ireland.
There are 31 cots in the unit . As infants begin to recover, the unit works closely with maternity services in other hospitals to move them to care near their homes, allowing the sickest newborns to then be admitted to intensive care cots here in the regional unit.
Community Midwifery
The team of community midwives provides antenatal, intra-natal and post-natal care to women and their families.
They are specialists in providing maternity care where there are no complications and they work together with local GPs and other health and social care professionals.
