Physiotherapists work with people of all ages to help restore movement and function after illness, injury or disability and assist them to achieve as active and independent a life as possible.

Their skills are used to treat a wide variety of different conditions such as:

  • fractures
  • respiratory conditions
  • learning disability
  • stroke
  • incontinence
  • sprains and strains
  • back pain
  • falls

Physiotherapists work in many ways:

  • Provide specialised  rehabilitation treatment for various conditions or injuries eg low back pain, work related injuries,neurological conditions, sports injuries
  • Provide practical guidance, treatment and advice eg. postural advice; back care; exercise post surgery
  • Develops specialised treatment programmes for long term conditions and children with disabilities 
  • Provide acupuncture
  • Undertakes home risk assessments
  • Provide a range of rehabilitation sessions eg. pilates; cardiac rehabilitation; pool exercise; pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Work with carer, family and voluntary organisations where required
  • Provide specialised rehabilitation treatment for patients with cancer
  • Provide splints, aids and other equipment as appropriate
  • Promote pain management

How to access the service

Physiotherapy is available in three settings:

In hospital (inpatient) - patients are referred to Physiotherapy by Medical or Nursing Staff for assessment and advice according to their need.

At hospital (outpatient) -Available for people who have either been discharged from hospital and

  • need ongoing Physiotherapy or
  • who have been referred by their GP or other health care professional.

For those needing  treatment following hospital discharge, referral is usually made as part of the hospital discharge process.

In the community – Available to people who require an assessment or ongoing treatment and are unable to get to an outpatient location due to health problems.
Referrals to these services must come from a GP or other health care professional.
