Genetics

The Northern Ireland Regional Genetics Service (NIRGS) is based in Belfast City Hospital and serves the whole of Northern Ireland.  As a regional centre of excellence it operates as part of the UK network of Regional Genetics Centres to provide a comprehensive set of clinical and laboratory genetics services including:

  • Genetic Assessment & Diagnosis
  • Genetic Counselling
  • Genetic Testing (both Molecular and Cytogenetic)

Clinic Locations

Genetic Outpatient Clinics take place in a number of hospitals and clinics across Northern Ireland, listed below. As not all clinic settings have access to the full range of clinical facilities, patients may be required to attend in Belfast or one of the hospital settings :

In Belfast:

Laboratory Genetics:

The Regional Genetics Laboratories provide:

  • Laboratory services for the diagnosis of constitutional chromosome abnormalities and those acquired in association with cancer, specifically leukaemias.
  • Laboratory services for the molecular diagnosis of genetic disorders and for the identification of carriers of these disorders.

How to access this service

Referrals to Genetics are made by a range of professionals from Primary, Secondary and Tertiary healthcare settings and from both hospital and community based services.

If you think you or your child may need Genetic Services please speak to your GP or Consultant who will be able to refer you if required. Many referrals can be dealt with by advice back to the referring doctor or healthcare professional.
